About Spring Lake

Spring Lake was founded in 1916 by six men – Henry J. Rupp, J.G. Stuart, S.M. Potter, H.J. Eaton, Addison Calkins, and Henry Germann. The land, consisting of 150 acres, was purchased from Mr. Homan, for whom the existing Homan Falls was named, and Mr. Arthur Bowles. This site is located on the picturesque bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River about three miles north of Quincy, IL.

Landscape architect, H.O. Simons (who also laid out the Quincy Park System) made the recommendation for the location of the lake and clubhouse. More than 15 acres of the valley were converted into a beautiful lake, supplied with clear water from an everlasting spring. This spring, which is fed by Lake Superior, flows from 700,000 to 1,000,000 gallons of water a day and is known as Leonard Springs. In 1920, the lake was divided by a dam, and the present bathing beach was built. In the early 1920s, a spacious clubhouse was added with large screened porches on either side and equipped with all modern conveniences, including hot and cold water showers, providing ample facilities for the club’s social life.

The golf course was built in 1923 by Henry Rupp, George Binkert, and Charles Clarkson. Sand greens were used until 1925 and sheep were kept to eat down the grass and weeds. Many members availed themselves of the building lots which were leased and attractive cottages began to adorn the hills surrounding the lake.

So Spring Lake Country Club had its beginning. All of the present members of Spring Lake today pay tribute to the early members who, through their efforts and far-sightedness, were able to envision and develop the club as we enjoy it today.
